Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken inside the Conservatory at Longwood Gardens.

Time

It was taken in the afternoon.

Lighting

I was indoors and the lighting at that time of day really made a nice, simple photo with great contrast.

Equipment

I used a Sony DSC-HX1 and it was hand held. It was 27mm at F4.5.

Inspiration

I was walking around inside the Conservatory, looking for photos. I was comparing the Sony vs my Nikon to see how the photos compared side by side. In this case, I really liked the Sony with the clarity and the close up I could get with the Praying Mantis.

Editing

It's been so long, I honestly don't remember. If anything, I would have cropped it some, but I was so close to it to start with, I don't think I even cropped it.

In my camera bag

I usually have a lot of non photographic items, like a couple bottles of water, extra batteries so I can rotate, a portable charger in case I want to also use my iPhone as a camera. A couple sweat rags for me. I don't carry a big camera bag. I only have a couple lenses for the Nikon and the Sony I used for this shot had one lens that went up to 560mm.

Feedback

Since I haven't really had any formal photography training, my rule of thumb is that I look for simplicity and contrast when I take a photo. This Praying Mantis was great because it was very content sitting on the white Spider Mum and not moving around a lot.
