Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina while on a pleasure trip through the mountains.

Time

I love this photo because it was taken in midafternoon, but appears to be an evening photo.

Lighting

I used no special lighting in this. It was the luck of the draw in that the natural light was perfect and I was there.

Equipment

Tripods are excellent tools, but as it happens, this was hand-held. What I did concentrate on was the composition.

Inspiration

I love photography and I love the mountains. Putting the two together just seemed like a natural.

Editing

I use a photo-processing program, but all this photo needed was just a click of the button called "feeling lucky." It adjusted the light a bit, but not much. While I am not a professional, many of my friends including professional photographers compliment my work. Viewbug photography peers do the same.

In my camera bag

My camera seldom goes in my bag. It's normally around my neck. What I do keep in the bag is a second lens, a miniature tripod, a plunger type shutter release, several filters, lens cleaner cloths and a hood for the camera. I also carry plastic bags that can protect the camera from the rain but still take good photos and a spray bottle with water to add water droplets when it's not raining. Also handy to have is a soft brush and a bulb to squirt air to dust off the lens. My one standby I cannot do without is the cameras instruction book to assist me with more complicated shots.

Feedback

Professionals would probably be more detailed, but what I have found is the need for composing the photo, not just pointing and shooting. Balance in the picture and filling the lens with the subject so there isn't clutter. I always take a "automatic" setting photo along with any manual ones I take and take several shots of the same thing. Shooting and shooting and shooting is more of a guarantee that you will get at least one shot you are happy with and makes the shoot worthwhile.
