Was it a deliberate choice to focus on the foreground trunks/branches, rather than on the gold leaves? If so, I'm not sure I understand.

Yes, I shot this view both ways, with gold leaves in focus first which blurred the foreground. I just preferred this version. The leaves were so vivid they looked like fire.
