Location

This photo was taken during the annual Orchid Show (an indoor event) held at the Chicago Botanic Gardens in February of 2014.

Time

I took this shot during the morning around 10 AM.

Lighting

It was rather low light in many areas inside this showroom but this orchid happened to be hanging near some outside light and I was able to capture those glistening water drops with not much of a problem.

Equipment

I used my tripod and Canon D70 along with my 100mm macro. No flash but made good use of the low light that was available in the area.

Inspiration

I had just bought my macro lens and what better way to try it in the dead of winter than at an indoor orchid event. I had just started learning about photography a short time before I took this flower and I was always amazed to see macro shots of flowers and insects. This was the perfect opportunity for me to practice macro photography.

Editing

After shooting this picture in raw, I brought it into Lightroom and used some brushes for clarity, saturation, and highlights. I also adjusted overall exposure and contrast.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Canon D70 along with my Canon100mm macro lens, Canon18-135mm lens, Canon70-300mm lens, and my Tamron 24-70 lens. I never know what I will be shooting so I always like to have a variety of lens with me. On occasion, I will just bring one lens just to challenge my creativity and perspective.

Feedback

The use of a tripod is extremely useful especially in low light. This allows you to bring down your ISO so there is less noise in the picture and allows for a sharper image.
