Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken along a mountain road in Montepulciano Italy, we stopped during a drive through Tuscany when we saw the clouds breaking to give way to the light you see.

Time

We shot all day but this is definitely one of my favorites from the set. This picture was taken in the early afternoon, I'd say around 3 or 4pm.

Lighting

We were in a rented Fiat 500 and had been commenting all day about how cloudy of a day it was. It didn't ruin the views but I remember thinking that I wished it was a bit brighter out but when the cloud cover broke to make way for these regal beams of light, it made up for the lack of brightness earlier in the day.

Equipment

I took this picture with a canon T2i and a EF-S 55-250mm lense. No tripod but I propped my elbows on the fence at the edge of the road. Auto focus was off and I was shooting wide open.

Inspiration

I mean, look at it.

Editing

Yes, I used photomatix to bring out some HDR after the fact. Photomatix works like a charm when you shoot in RAW. I often get told that my pictures have a cartoony look to them but I like that. I like looking back at pictures of trips and thinking of them as fantastic because that's how they exist in my memory.

In my camera bag

I always have the 70D body with the 55-250 lense, a nifty fifty and a fisheye. A gopro or two and plenty of stuff to mount and clean both. The floater door for the gopro is also a must.

Feedback

Unfortunately, I don't think I have much to offer in the way of advice, as you can see I don't have many pictures like this one because this one just happened. I try to shoot during times of the day where natural light will have interesting effects or at least produce something that can be more easily turned into an interesting effect in post. The best advice that I try to follow is to make sure you have your camera with you as much as possible, that way when a moment like this happens, you'll be ready to make it immortal.
