Location
I took this photo in Jackson St Park in Mendocino, CATime
3pmLighting
The thing about the redwood forest is that traditional rules of lighting don't necessarily apply. The golden hours tend to be from 10am to 5pm when the sun is higher in the sky and shadows lay on the ground.Equipment
This was taken with the first point and shoot I ever bought. Nikon P100Inspiration
When I first moved to Mendocino from Kentucky, I would spend hours walking in Jackson St Forest in awe of the redwood trees, experimenting with my first non-smartphone camera. One of the first things you notice in in the RWF is these "Fairy Rings". They are spawn from an old growth tree. The old growth tree has been cut/fallen/burned and only the fairy ring remains. This fairy ring in particular caught my attention. The P100 has a swivel LCD. For this shot I turned on live view, rotated the screen to face out and then basically sat the camera on the ground, pointing straight up. I set the timer, hit the shutter and stepped back.Editing
The colors were saturated and it was certainly cropped. In my camera bag
Like I said, this was taken with my first camera so I've added quite a bit to my bag since then. I now primarily use the Mark II. I have a T3i that goes everywhere I go as well because like the P100, it has a swivel screen LCD that I really like to utilize Tamron SP 24-70, Canon 50mm and Canon 70-300mmFeedback
UTILIZE THE SWIVEL SCREEN IF YOU HAVE IT. Shoot from high above your head. Shoot from low to the ground. Shoot around corners. It can really expand your horizons.
