Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in Andermatt, Switzerland, after a long but incredible day's skiing.

Time

Having just dumped all of our skiing gear, we headed out for a stroll around the village as the sun just began to set.

Lighting

As the sun had only just begun to set, it still felt quite natural, having not taken on that strong yellow tinge, though being February it was naturally low enough to create some interesting shadows.

Equipment

I was using a Canon 650d with a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens.

Inspiration

I pretty much took a double take as I walked across a bridge over the river, after taking a couple of tests, I waited for the ski lift to line up a bit more pleasingly for the shot.

Editing

I did some fairly simple post processing in Adobe Camera Raw as I hadn't yet delved into Lightroom. I brought up some of the shadows and increased the Intensity of some of the darker blues to bring out the river a bit better and to make it look as cold as it really was.

In my camera bag

Now, I carry around a Sony a6300 with a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 and the kit lens. I also usually take a small tripod, as the a6300 doesn't require anything too beefy.

Feedback

All I could really say is just watch the light change for yourself as sunset begins, I've sometimes found that the most pleasing light can often occur during the very early and late stage of the 'golden hour, depending on where you are. Also just looking out for scenes that are already framed by nature is really useful, in this case the river lining up with the town and the chapel, and cutting through the middle of the two mountains, with the trees framing either side.
