Behind The Lens

Location

I belong to a group of photographers aptly named "Picture Enfield" on FB...we have a number of informal photo opportunities around the town I live in (Enfield, CT). We tour a number of local places, shoot and then select our picks that debute on our FB page and then appear in our local newspaper. This gives everyone the opportunity to become more familiar with landmarks and events in town. The building is The Hazardville Institute which in 1837, Col Augustus Hazard bought into the powder-manufacturing enterprise in the section of Enfield that would become known as Hazardville. Hazard donated land (at the corner of Hazard Avenue and North Maple Street) for the construction of the Hazardville Institute, an Italianate-style building that was used as a meeting space by the community. It fell into disrepair in the 1970s and was saved from demolition by a group of preservationists in 1979. The building has recently been restored by the Hazardville Institute Conservancy Society.

Time

This photo was shot on February 23, 2014 at 2:35 in the afternoon using a monopod.

Lighting

I pretty much fly by the seat of my pants (I know its not good but this allows for many different angles and settings...I am usually the person way behind as I like to do funky things and just play with light, speed and angle

Equipment

I used my Nikon D200 with AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-55 m f/3.5-5.6 G EDII lense, ISO 400, Auto White Balnce, Apeture f/8, Shutter Speed 1/20... I also use a monopod as I have a slight tremor from years of cycling-

Inspiration

I really enjoy getting gritty photos that serve to capture the many years of wear and those lessons conveyed by people and weather elements. In this particular shot I was drawn to the tones of brown that appeared organic along with the contrast between wood and metal. To me, the shot captures a story that will last long after we have exited the building and returned to our lives.

Editing

I use Aperture as I just switch to APPLE format and did a slight adjustment to exposure and saturation.

In my camera bag

I have two camera bodies that I usually carry- Nikon D200 and Nikon D7100 depending on what I am going after I will choose a the from anyone of the following: Nikon AF S DX 18-55 Zoom f/3.5-5.6G, Sigma EX 10-20mm 1:4-5.6, Nikon DX VR 18-140 mm 1:3.5-5.6, Nikon DX AFS 18-55 1:3.5-5.6 G or Nikon DX VR 70-300 1:4.5-5.6 I most always have both camera bodies one with a wide angle and the other with a zoom....

Feedback

Just get out and shoot....play with settings, angles, your position to what you see. I am constantly changing my position and experimenting with light and vantage points. Avoid putting pressure on yourself or having unrealistic expectations, the idea is to explore and sometimes being uncomfortable gets unique results where you get to actually articulate what you do on ViewBug...
