Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at an old disused wharf in the Lake Macquarie area in NSW Australia

Time

I specifically went to photograph the wharf, it was around 2pm in the afternoon on a particularly overcast and not very pleasant day.

Lighting

I wanted to experiment with long exposure at that time of the day, it was an overcast day but still reasonably bright so I incorporated black gland or as most call them ND filters as I wanted a fairly long exposure time of at least 30s.

Equipment

This image was captured on a Canon 5DMIII using a Manfrotto tripod for required stability.

Inspiration

I really wanted to capture the slowed down and misted ocean waves that are prevalent in the area and also the cloud movement, giving the overall finished image a more mystical feel.

Editing

Simple post processing was required a little bit of saturation and some minor exposure adjustments.

In my camera bag

On this particular day I only had the camera, lens and tripod as well as the ND filter that I needed for the image capture.

Feedback

This image can be achieved with most cameras that allow long exposure, a good tripod for that added stability, even standard lenses will do a great job and just a basic or variable ND filter of which there are now many on the market will suffice to get a great image, of course practice makes perfect so go and photograph a lot of different things to get a feel for what your after.
