Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the 12 Apostles on the Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. It is one of the most beautiful and natural tourist attractions that we have in Victoria. Though it is called 12 Apostles there are now only a few left due sea erosion.

Time

This was taken on a very windy but sunny afternoon when we were driving back from Warnambool to Melbourne.

Lighting

Only natural light used for this photo.

Equipment

Canon EOS 600D - 55mm kit lens leaning on the fence post to stay still as it was too windy to drag the tripod around from place to place.

Inspiration

I was look for something that would include most of the 12 apostles and that would show the sheer beauty and the roughness that does come in being on the coast as well as the beautiful colours. It is one of the most photographed places in Victoria but I believe everyone captures what they want to see in their photos and they will all be slightly different because of this.

Editing

Yes in photoshop. Mainly exposure as the brightness had to be dropped a bit and vibrance/saturation was upped slightly. I also did colour balance and a levels layer.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon 600d with my Canon 55mm & 55-250mm kit lenses as well as a Tamron 70-300mm. I have a self timer attachment as well for any long exposure shots I may want to take as well as a flash diffuser. The tripod usually comes along in a seperate bag in case it is required. I also have a spare battery and spare memory cards.

Feedback

As you learn landscape/nature photography the biggest thing you need is patience. A shot you may like is not necessarily going to be the 1st shot that you take but may be sometime later in the day whether that by minutes or hours later. Always try and shoot until you capture that one shot that you are after it is always worth it. Trying to get a handle on exposure, aperture and ISO with lots of practice so you can get shots right in camera is important. It is not something that will click straight away I know that it took me a while but once it does it makes your shooting a lot easier and you can concentrate on getting that shot you after rather than fiddling with a hundred settings on your camera. Most of all the more you shoot what you love and what you want to shoot the more you will enjoy what you are doing and once you are in love with photography it is like a drug you can't not do it, it runs in you and you will get the itch to get out there all of the time.
