Location
I took this photo at the Sourwood Inn in Asheville, North Carolina. The Inn has 12 rooms and each has a small deck with blooming potted plants. From the decks you can see several mountains that are like waves. The Inn is located about two miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Elk Mountain. I am very proud of this photo because I am very much a beginning photographer.Time
I took the photo in late afternoon. between 5 and 6 pm.Lighting
I used the setting for flower photos and automatic flash caused the background to be dark, which I really liked.Equipment
I have a Nikon D3000, which purchased from someone upgrading to a more expensive camera. Since I was very much a beginner, this camera is still working well for me. I used the 50mm lens. I did not use a tripod, and I used the camera's automatic setting for flower close-ups.Inspiration
The impatiens or sultanas, as we southerners call this flower, is one of my favorites. While l like red and white sultanas more than lavender, I just thought this particular flower was very beautiful.Editing
I did crop the photo as my original photo has more blooms and I wanted the photo to reflect just one bloom. I also darkened the background a little. In my camera bag
I have my 50mm and 200mm lens. As previously stated, I am a beginner. I also have a few filters, but have not really ever used them.Feedback
Always make several photos of anything you are inspired to photograph from several different perspectives. Although I know about the rule of thirds, I do not let it get in the way of my creativity. Sometimes that is good, sometimes not. When it is not, I know how to delete. When photographing flowers, I sometimes have problems with lighting that distorts the color of the flower, so I will use different settings to try and get the color to look natural and be the color of the actual flower. My advice is to beginners. Some of the pros I see on ViewBug have better lens and much more knowledge for photographing flowers.
