Behind The Lens

Location

As many other my photos, this one was taken at home, I'm a strobist, so this is quite easy to make a home-studio even for the extraordinary projects.

Time

We made it late at night! It was not an ordinary day, it was the Birthday of my model and best friend Anna, we had a very long preliminary preparation, and there was no assistant, so it was really hard. So we started at afternoons and finished after midnight.

Lighting

I suppose the bottom frontal flash made the greatest part of the atmosphere on this photo. We wanted to show the miracle, made the sense of ethereal, so I decided that the best option would be to enlighten cocoon from inside and same time to light the face of my model from below.

Equipment

I used Canon 7D, Canon 17-40 mm lens, two speedlite flashes, white umbrella and globe-diffuser for the bottom flash. And the really important equipments were two stools used as tripods for the cocoon.

Inspiration

Of course I was inspired by the beauty of butterfly. And also it was the great challenge to make THE COCOON! Anna made it from cotton threads and glue, I made butterfly's wings from wire and drawing film, painted with spray paint. There is no greater pleasure than to create a fairy tale with your own hands.

Editing

I did not do any especial retouch, except changing the eyes. Unfortunately we didn't have scleral lenses at that time, but wanted the effect of insect eyes, so I had to increase the pupil and iris to completely hide the white.

In my camera bag

Normally I have my Canon 7D with 17-40mm lens and one or two exchangeable lens, for example 28 mm or 85 mm, 2-3 speedlite flashes, monopod and white umbrella.

Feedback

Be creative! Use any available equipment and stuff, don't be afraid to make something by your own hands, and remember that when we talk about the staged photography, there should be a really interesting idea to take the breath of your audience away.
