Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the spectacular Hymettus mountain, near the city of Athens .It is a very beautiful place and every time you visit it you get fresh ideas and potential for beautiful photos.

Time

I have happened to shoot photos there almost all times of the day , from early morning till after dark. The specific photo was taken at about 4 p.m in January 2014. It was a relatively mild winter day. However, of couse it was cold, so in the breaks between shootings the bride was either wearing her coat or getting warm in her husband's arms!

Lighting

For this photo I used an external Nikon flash, which was placed almost 45 degrees from the bride's left side and about 135 degrees from the camera. I wanted to add dimension and shape to the photo and to highlight the bride's face,so placing the flash at that point helped me a lot.

Equipment

For this photo ? used this equipment: A Dslr Nikon D3s with a lens Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, the SB 900 Nikon flash and 2 Pocket Wizard Plus II

Inspiration

I saw ths stone fountain as we were walking in the forest. My first thought was that the specific spot could allow us some sitting shootings of the bride. By leaning her back against the spot, she would feel more relaxed and she would not look too stiff. Furthermore, the beauty of her wedding gown could be highlighted.

Editing

The wedding photos are unique for every couple. So I believe that a partial post processing can help the photos become more impressive and more cherished by the newly weds. For the specific photo I used Abode Lightroom. I adjusted the shadows and the highlights to the resolution I wanted and I made light use of the technique dodge and burn. Then I turned the photo into black and white adding some grainy texture so that it had the aesthetics of a film. I finished the post processing adding some vignette, so that the viewer's attention is focused on the bride first.

In my camera bag

For the last year I have moved from Nikon to Sony professional equipment. So my bag almost always contains the following equipment: 2 cameras Sony A7ii ??? ?7Rii 3 lenses Sony, E 70-200mm f/4.0 G OSS, Sony FE-24-70mm F4 Carl Zeiss ZA OSS Vario-Tessar T* and ony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS A Sony HVL-F 58 AM flash radio frequencies of Pocket Wizard and many memory cards!

Feedback

Our digital era and technology allows many who are not professionally occupied with photography to have easy access to it and to sometimes claim many jobs from professional photographers. This is quite usual ,especially with wedding photos, where any "Uncle Bob" assumes the title of an expert and puts himself over any professional. So I believe that today's professional wedding and portrait photographer must be well aquainted with posing and lighting, to be familiar with his equipment , ability and basic photo processing. This can be achieved only with continuous education and hard work.He will have to look back at older seasoned photographers so as to know the basic rules of posing and lighting and to be inspired by the young great photographers, so as to present something completely different. Finally, participation in professional communities, such as Viewbug is important because through them a professional can benefit and develop even more, technically and professionally alike.
