Location
This photo was taken at Tenerife in the Canary Islands during a visit I made there to speak at a conference.Time
I took this photo during an evening stroll near my hotel.Lighting
The sun was just going down, coloring the sky a deep orange, and back-lighting the hills beyond the harbor.Equipment
I used a Canon PowerShot digital camera, handheld and on the auto setting without a filter.Inspiration
I was taking photos of the beach scene below my hotel. The weather was perfect and the sea was calm. Standing on a hill over the beach, I was struck by the depth of color and contrast in this scene, which captured for me the essence of the island.Editing
The only post processing was sharpening and increasing contrast to bring out the colors and the contrast between sea and sky.In my camera bag
I usually carry two cameras, just in case the batteries in one start to fade. Sometimes I also carry a set of contrast filters, a remote shutter release, and a tripod. On this occasion, though, I only had the one camera.Feedback
Keep your eyes open to what's around you. The perfect picture, when it comes to scenes like this, can't really be planned. You have to be ready to shoot when it seems right. It does help, though, to try and find a position to shoot from that enables you to eliminate foreground distractions and include only the things that communicate the message you're hoping for in your photo.
