Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the neighborhood that I lived in in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Time

Taken around 9:00 am.

Lighting

There was a fine mist that cast a kind of veil over everything, an almost surreal quality, so I decided to go for natural light, for the saturation. I set my camera on the landscape setting and shot with no manual changes, then when I uploaded to my computer, I amped the contrast up slightly.

Equipment

Canon PowerShot SX 10 IS with 18 - 55 mm lens. Shot at f/5.0, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/100.

Inspiration

Days like this elicit strong emotions, reminding me of when I lived in West Africa and during the rainy season the landscape looked like this for days on end. I was on my way to buy ice cream when I saw this, and immediately ran back inside and got my camera and took this photo.

Editing

The only post processing was cropping to have the two large trees framing the misty background and amping up the contrast to have better demarcation between dark and light areas.

In my camera bag

In addition to my camera with the standard lens, I usually carry a telephoto lens and a set of contrast filters. I used to carry a tripod but it was destroyed in a house fire and I've not yet replaced it.

Feedback

The only advice I would give is always have your camera handy. You never know what you'll see when you step outside. Once, as I left my garage to go shopping, I saw a tiny fawn in the bushes next to the wall, hunkering down waiting for its mother. Scenes like this just happen and you have to be ready for them.
