Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home city Krakow in Poland. Since I moved out it is always very sentimental to go back there. In each corner there is photo opportunity. This place is a park which goes around the city centre, called Planty, always magical at night...

Time

It was winter, Christmas spirit in the air... I took a lot of photos that evening but this one was my favourite. There is something in this park that won't let you pass by without stopping.

Lighting

There are beautiful lampposts which give great effect. I didn't use any extra lighting just wanted to preserve the feel they are giving in the park.

Equipment

The photo was taken a year ago when I only has my Canon 1100D with EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III. I didn't have my tripod with me so I had to raise ISO as much as my camera would let me which was 6400. Taken at 39.0 mm 1/80 sec; f/5.0 It has come out a bit grainy but I do like the effect in this case.

Inspiration

Krakow will be always special for me and as I don't live there any more I have an opportunity to look at it from a different perspective, like a tourist perhaps. Especially at night there a places that draw your attention and Planty park is one of them; with those lamppost that give enough light so you won't get lost but will make you feel that you entering a magical place in the centre of big, busy city.

Editing

I have made this photo a bit darker by adjusting shadows to make it less noisy in some parts due to high ISO and to draw attention to lights and benches. I also reduced clarity which made lamppost look more "dreamy". As a final touch I've added orange filter to make it warmer.

In my camera bag

Not long ago I have purchased Canon 6D and I have fallen in love with it since day 1. It did affect me financially so I can't afford to get any fancy lens but 50mm 1.8mm canon prime lens suits me fine for now. I use occasionally canon zoom lens 80-200mm 1:4.5-5.6 II but I have to work harder with my settings to get the sharpest images. Still I'm happy to have any gear to be able to take photos!

Feedback

Never ignore something that draws your attention. Could be light, bench anything. I used to pass this park daily but I had to move out and come back to discover it again. If you are planning night shots always take your tripod but if you get caught unprepared don't give up and use all forces you got on hand. There is always a way! Boost your ISO or find something to place your camera and take the photo. Never pass on opportunity... ( because maybe one day ViewBug will write to you and say they love your photo and want you to share your experience! ) - optional ;)
