This barn which was torn down the summer after I took this picture was in Longmont, Colorado.Time
Doing what I do often after a snow storm I pack up my photo gear and head out for photo ops early in the morning before the traffic hits the road and or the wind blows the snow off the trees.Lighting
It was a cloudy and overcast and a bit of fog from the snow.Equipment
I have several cameras but the one I always fall back on is my Canon EOS 1DS Mark III. No tripod as I was parked where I shouldn't have been and standing in a water runoff ditch knee deep in snow. So I knew I had to take the picture as fast as possible.Inspiration
I have always been a fan of barns...any barn whether new or ready to be torn down. When I saw this one with the green fence and the bare trees covered in snow, the cattails in their winter state, and last but not least the color of the fade red paint, I knew I had to risk parking where I should not be and try for a picture. You all know...most photographers will do what they have to do to get the shot. At least I do! Added note...so happy that I took the time for this picture as that same summer this barn was torn down. I couldn't help have a sad moment for it's destruction...seems time somehow just got erased.Editing
Often when I happen on a photo op like this one I get a visual of what it might look like in post processing. With this one I felt giving it a rustic vintage feel by using many layers of textures would create something that I would like to have printed on canvas. I was pleased with the end result. In my camera bag
Oh geez....when I am out searching for something I take almost all the gear I have. Can a photographer pack too many cameras and lens...I think not. However, my go to lens is my Canon Zoom Lens EF 24-105mm 1:4 L IS and my Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III. Having said that I recently added a EOS 5Dsr to my collection of cameras and finding that it produces excellent pictures and I love that resolution...now if I can only learn it all.Feedback
Get up early...stay up late and don't be afraid to park where you are not supposed to park. And ALWAYS pack your boots and a set of warm gloves.
