Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Orange Beach, Alabama as Tropical Storm Debby lurked offshore.

Time

This photo was taken mid afternoon as some of the outer feeder bands were brushing the coast.

Lighting

The dramatic look of the photo was due to the very detailed cloud cover that provided a very eerie look to not only the clouds but also the waves.

Equipment

I used a Sony Alpha 55 with tripod and standard 18-55 mm lens. I had the tripod at its lowest level above the ground to put emphasis on the building waves.

Inspiration

I am a true weather geek and love to photograph all thing weather. I knew with a tropical storm nearby it would provide some awesome photo opportunities.

Editing

I used Adobe Lightroom to help bring out the shadows and tone down the highlights as well as boosting clarity to give it almost a HDR effect.

In my camera bag

I carry a Canon 70D with a EFs 18-135mm as my daily lens. I also have a Sigma AP0 DG 70-300mm and a GoPro Hero 3+ Silver as well as several 32gb memory cards and a flashlight for shooting in dark conditions. All kept in my Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW bag

Feedback

To get the best photos don't be afraid to push the envelope. Especially in weather the best shots come in the storm. Always protect your gear but get out there and have fun! Always remember composition is very important as seen in this shot with the pier in the background. With this composition it show the true power of the storm.
