Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photograph while in Hana, Hawaii. I saw this cat that had sadly been run over. The bizarre part is that it still comes across as cute and not everyone realises that it was in a bad accident.

Time

I was hitch-hiking around the island of Maui and found this cat in the early afternoon. It's sad that it had to give up its life to traffic and I hope I can help prevent future accidents like this by sharing this image.

Lighting

I want the image to look rough and bleak like the midday light. I've only desaturated it a bit and lifted the shadows, the light is natural.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon 5D Mk II with a Zenitar 16mm 2.8 fisheye.

Inspiration

I came across this cat and saw how sad it was that it had to give up its life.

Editing

Adding clarity, desaturating it, correcting distortion from the fisheye and lifting the shadows.

In my camera bag

Back on this trip I had a lot of equipment with me and the 5D Mk II. Recently I'm starting to travel lighter with one kit lens e.g. 24-70 and a few primes, 35mm and 85mm. Or I just bring my Fuji x100t or a Rolleiflex if I want to shoot old-school.

Feedback

Roadkill is always sad. When you come across it, don't make it too graphic. Show the subtleties and let people feel/imagine the rest.
