Location
I took this photo while driving the back roads near Sylamore, Arkansas.Time
This was taken at 8:45 a.m. I went out early in the day specifically hunting butterflies because they seem to be more active in the mornings before the dew is gone.Lighting
I take advantage of natural light as much as possible. Because it was past the soft light of a sunrise/sunset, I chose a low f-stop to blur the background hoping to add interest.Equipment
I used a Nikon D7000 with a Nikkor 70-300mm lens.Inspiration
I love photographing butterflies and usually find them on colorful flowers. The shape of this Button Bush drew me to this particular scene.Editing
I bumped up the saturation a very small amount to make up for the bright morning light that can bleach out the colors. In my camera bag
I use only Nikon equipment and usually carry my Nikon D7000 and Nikon 3200, a tripod, five lenses/70-300mm, 300-500mm, a micro lens, and two lenses up to 55mm. I'm an amateur and am still adding to my equipment as I learn.Feedback
With butterflies (or any insect) I find a location with a lot of activity, get comfortable and watch, watch, watch and shoot, shoot, shoot. I usually take hundreds of shots and that's why getting comfortable is extremely important. Having more than one camera and lens handy is also good, because you never know where the butterfly will land. Most important tip of course, have fun!
