Yes, this is a Sandhill Crane. They are migratory birds, but some stay year round. They are HUGE, and beautiful. This one was at Kensington Metropark on the East side of the state.

Behind The Lens

Location

I drove two and a half hours to Kensington Metropark on the East side of Michigan because I heard there are always sandhill cranes there, and I had never seen one in person, that’s where I got this shot.

Time

Sunset. Of course it was sunset in winter in Michigan so that was probably around 4pm?

Lighting

There was a mix of very light drizzle and rain that added a very pretty effect to the image that looks a lot like sparkles.

Equipment

Sony A7iii, a Tamron 70-180mm lens, and a winter coat because it was freezing?

Inspiration

I had a random encounter with a great blue heron while taking a photo of a bridge, but it was so far away I didn’t get a great photo. This lead me to seek out places I might see wildlife.

Editing

I shoot raw so there is always some post processing but I try to keep it very true to the image, and what I saw, since I’m trying to share a bit of something with the world. I want them to see what I saw.

In my camera bag

Sony A7iii, Tamron 70-180mm, Tamron 28-75mm, a blower to get rid of dust, lens wipes, a brush, spare lens caps in case I lose one, a flexible lens hood, spare batteries, spare SD cards.

Feedback

Join birdwatching groups online and find out where the birds are ???? most people are happy to share that info. But be respectful of nature. Absolutely no cutting branches to get photos of owls, or intentionally spooking birds to get them in flight. If you are at a park or a nature preserve, check that feeding birds is allowed before doing so.
