Behind The Lens

Location

We were on a boat in the Santa Barbara Chanell on the way to Santa Cruz Island (Chanell Island National Park). Not long after we were underway, the pelicans started following the boat. They would come in very low (within 5 ft of the water) & pretty close (20 - 30 ft) to the boat. And there were a lot of them. Not just these two. A few minutes after the pelicans showed up, the dolphins started showing up too (you may have seen picture of some of them here as well). The situation went from "pretty cool" to "WOW!" instantaneously!

Time

The boat doesn't leave the harbor before sunrise. Since it was February, this would have to have been taken between 7:30 & 8:00 AM.

Lighting

Just natural early morning, natural daylight.

Equipment

I'm a Nikon guy. This was taken with one of my D3400s and my AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm.

Inspiration

We were going out the to enjoy the wildlife and indeed we did! Way exceeded our expectations!

Editing

No post-processing. This is straight off of the camera.

In my camera bag

I usually go out with two D3400s, One with an 18-55mm lense & the other with a 70-300 lense. This usually handles most situations. I keep a macro lense, a wide angle lense and a Sigma 150-600mm in my pack for the more challenging stuff.

Feedback

Just get up & get out there! You're probably not going to get too many good pictures from the coach.
