Fred Gilroy was an ordinary British soilder who's unit was sent in to liberate Bergen Belsen concentraction camp in 1945.. When his unit arrived they found 20,000 rotting corpses and 50,000 starving inmates.. Even with medical care another 13,000 died soon after .. Fred volunteered to stay behing to bury the bodies.. He was there on his 24th birthday and cried.. After the war he cried every year on his birthday.. He never married and the volunteers were later be known as The Belsen Stragglers..
