Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo right from my driveway in Buffalo, NY.

Time

I took this picture around 2am.

Lighting

The moon can be seen throughout the year at all different times of the day and night. I try to wait until the moon is closer to 1/2 full or less due to the intense shine it gives us when it’s a full moon. It can be very hard to capture crisp details of our closest celestial neighbor when it’s at full illumination.

Equipment

I used a Canon Powershot SX50 HS Camera on a tripod. I did not use any special flashes but I did lower the overall lighting manually.

Inspiration

In November Of 1969, NASA launched the second Apollo mission which touched the lunar surface. The name of that mission was Apollo 12. On board we’re the 3rd and 4th moon walkers Pete Conrad and Alan Bean along with astronaut Richard “Dick” Gordon. In his years of retirement Alan Bean took his memories and actual moon dust from his spacesuit and patches and added them into his paintings which always featured his time spend on the lunar surface. He later really enjoyed painting this place he and only 11 other men have ever been. I spend alot of time just looking at Luna and I always wondered what more I could see from Earth. After all my favorite astronaut really saw beauty in a place that to most others was just grey and basically just vast nothingness. Alan Bean saw a lot of things for their inner beauty not just the moon. He was a colorful person which really shined in his artwork. Alan Bean inspires me everyday even though he now lives among the stars above us. His message and just his personality to me is how I see the Moon. It’s beautiful place that has so much more to teach us yet it’s a part of us. The moon is very photogenic and honestly never bores me. I’ve been taking pictures of her ever since I can remeber and each picture to me is special and makes me feel like I too have been on the lunar surface!

Editing

No. The picture is as it was taken.

In my camera bag

My tripod which I love is always #1 in my bag! I use a Zomei Q111 and is extremely lightweight and very easy to carry and set up in just a few seconds. My other must have in my bag besides my camera is the clicker accessory that allows me to take multiple pictures or just one and get the focus just the way I want all without having to move the camera and gives me the ability to stand where I want when taking it.

Feedback

The moon is ALWAYS ready for a close up shot or is always ready to help your picture stand out while she shines In the backround. The lighting created on Earth leaves millions of ways to make any scenic shot really look defined as it’s bathed in the moonlight. The moon has several phases which also make for multiple amazing photo shoots leaving you with tons of different ways to really see and enjoy our closest celestial neighbor.
