Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Sunrise Ceremony on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. The Sunrise Ceremony seeks to honor the traditions of the indigenous peoples on the day that attention is usually devoted elsewhere. It’s also sometimes referred to as Un-thanksgiving Day.

Time

I took this photo during sunrise at 9:31 a.m.

Lighting

The sunrise was beautiful and strong.

Equipment

For this photo, I used my Sony a7Riii with one of my favorite lenses, a Nikon AF-S dx nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5g. It is lightweight enough to place in my bag and carry around but still has a zoom I can work with.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture that light in the feathers on the regalia worn. It happened to be very windy that morning.

Editing

I did minor post-editing; I adjusted the exposure, highlights, and shadows.

In my camera bag

I’m not particularly eager to bring a lot of equipment around on my person. I rarely use a tripod or a flash for this reason. Plus, I like all my lighting to be natural to the location. For this photo, I used my Sony a7Riii with one of my favorite lenses, a Nikon AF-S dx nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5g. It is lightweight enough to place in my bag and carry around but still has a zoom I can work with. In this case, it was the sunrise that was working with slowly increasing its intensity. This setup with my camera is very typical. I have a few other lenses but get considerable opportunities to capture moments with this particular lens.

Feedback

To become masters, we must practice, but sometimes, we should give ourselves a limitation to work through that challenges us and allows us to think more creatively about our subject. It's challenging and yet rewarding to accomplish these goals with slight restrictions/limitations set.
