This photo shows part of an old city gate of the medieval fortified city of Bergen op Zoom.

The tower was built around 1350 AD. Originally it was one of the four gateways to the city, but due to urban expansion it came to be within the new city walls. For years afterwards it served as a prison tower, hence its modern name; Gevangenepoort (Prison Gate).

Bergen op Zoom is my place of birth and place of residence, an ancient city with a lot of history (that even goes back to the Roman time) and monuments. This old city gate is one of them. The photo is from 2015.
