The Matla River forms a large estuary in and around the Sundarbans in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. During the monsoons, the Matla gets so tumultuous that boats cannot carry passengers. At the same time, the Matla has grown so silted that boats cannot approach the jetties during the dry season and must be stationed 460 metres (500 yards) out from the jetty. Long portions of the Matla have embankments to protect nearby settlements from floods.
