Location
This Tricolorer Heron was photographed in Biloxi Marsh located in St Bernard Parish Louisiana. To get there, you have to take a boat from Pass Christian Mississippi. We use Shore Thing Charter to take us there. I have spent a lot of time in the 70's and 80's shrimp commercially in the marshes of Louisiana. It has now turned into a wonderful place for birding.Time
To get the best light for birding, you have to leave the docks at Pass Christian at day break. It is about a 45 min ride to the nesting and marsh area where the Roseate Spoonbills Herons, Egrets, Ibises & Other Wading Birds hang out.Lighting
Some notiable information about lighting for the birding areas is early morning to around 10am. Most location are photographed from south to north and an easterly rising sun.Equipment
The last few years, my camera has been Nikon equipment, D850, Z72 and now this year the Z9 using a 1.4 converter with the Nikon 200-500mm lens. It gives me 700mm of lens for shooting from the boat. Most of my images are hand helded and a few with a mono pod.Inspiration
The Adult birds usually sit high the the vegetation in the marsh with the nest down in the bush. When you see the light that hits the adult males in breeding colors, the photos just stand out.Editing
I always shoot RAW and process in Adobe RAW. After opening in PhotoShop, I now use Topaz Photo AI to do some final processing for noice and sharpening. With the images from the Z9, very little noice and sharpening is needed, the image are awesome out of the camera. In my camera bag
On these boat trips, I take very little extra equipment other than an extra battery and maybe one other lens for landscape photos. I use the 24-120 Z lens for the landscape.Feedback
Taking a trip to the Louisiana marsh and dealing with a boat trip, can pose some unique problems. You deal with an open boat and when traveling out, can get a little rough, causing wave to splash on you. Protection for your equipment is paramount. I do recommend a dry bag that scuba divers use to keep things dry. Bug spray and sunscreen are also important. Last but not least, patience and being still as possible, even being in a boat.
