Behind The Lens

Location

This photo has been taken in my parents garden. When I was younger this was a morning walk for me, now it happens rarely, but I always take a chance when it’s in bloom and the sun is shining: wandering around, even in such a known place, I still get lost in the tiniest things.

Time

It was short before I started my working day, so something before nine in the morning. I love the light not too long after the sun rise: everything is still wet and brilliant (or covered of ice in winter time), colours are bright, small insects are still sleepy and easier to catch, shades are softer. It’s magical

Lighting

This particular daytime has a warm light, still not too bright, seems to embrace the subjects, shades are a little paler than later, even if much longer, it’s easy to get wonderful bokeh effects. I deeply suggest to start shooting at dawn and continue for at least a couple of hours seeing how the light changes in the meantime. This is absolutely my favourite daytime, and the garden is maybe my preferred playground.

Equipment

This shot was taken this my camera, Canon EOS 6D and my macro lenses, SIGMA 70 1:2.8 DG MACRO, very versatile. Usually I made a second version with my mobile phone, but not for this one.

Inspiration

I can say that I love macro and I am a details freak. On the feet of a huge liquidambar styraciflua in the garden, there’s a complete carpet of these violets, and I love this variety. So, despite I was ready for the office, wearing skirt and high heels, I saw that the light was perfect that morning, and I made a quick walk into the garden, trying not to get full of mud. Kneeling down was challenging, I realised I could not reach the right perspective I had in mind without laying on the ground, that I couldn’t, so as much as I could, I looked through the viewfinder moving the camera away from me, lowering my head while being in an unstable balance, and finally I got it!

Editing

I reduced a little the noise, accentuate the brilliance and light, the shot is very closed to the original one. Normally I do not post process a lot, unless I want to transmit something very different from what the shot itself gives, but this is not the case.

In my camera bag

My camera and my macro lenses, a medium tele (70-300), UV and Sky light filter, battery charger. I move light.

Feedback

I suggest to test the different times of the day, shades and light intensity can completely make a different shot, even with the same subject. I never get tired on the garden, so if you love nature, flowers, bugs, macro, just go out: dawn, dusk, noon, any time in between, the blue hour. Just go. Look. Even a pot in a balcony hide secrets, it’s up to you being able to see them. Photographies are first of all in the eye of the photographer. Take your time, change perspective, change your playfield. You will be delighted.
