Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my childhood village in Romania. It reminds me of the pure freedom and the simple life I had growing up in here.

Time

Being in maternity leave I enjoyed a month at my dad's house in Romania with my 5 months old baby and I felt like every day was magic. I remember taking my baby for a drive around the village in my dad's pick up and not being able to stop the engine as my baby would start crying. However I managed to get a few shots of the forest using my tripod. This photo was taken in April around 10.00 am just after the rain.

Lighting

It wasn't the golden hour but the light was good as was raining just before. I wanted to emphasise the white steam that was rising from the forest. For this purpose probably a white mist filter would have been perfect. However, I am a amateur photographer and I can't afford all the equipment I would like to have. Nevertheless, I increased the clarity and the contrast and I managed to emphasise the white steam quite well.

Equipment

For this photo I used a Canon 5d mark iv with a canon lens 70-200mm and a tripod. I believe this lens was perfect as the forest was quite far away from where I was parked and I wanted to photograph the forest with the blossomed trees and the rising mist in the background.

Inspiration

I was looking to take a picture that will remind me of the best time of my life my childhood when life was simple and beautiful. The days I did not know what pollution is, what Internet and social media are, how busy and stressful every day life of and adult can be. I keep this picture in my bedroom during the spring because every time I look at it I feel freedom, fresh air and a simple stress free life!

Editing

To emphasise the colours and the white mist I increased the contrast the clarity and very little the saturation. Probably there could be done a lot more to this picture but I am still learning post editing and I love the end result.

In my camera bag

In my bag are always my canon camera 5d mark iv with the canon 70-200mm lens and my tripod. Recently I purchased a polarised filter that is attached to my 70-200mm lens. Additionally I add my wildlife lens 100-400mm if I know that I may find some wildlife or I am planning to photograph my baby.

Feedback

Being able to capture similar photo during the golden hours could be an award winning photograph. Nevertheless, the light after a heavy rain or the spring showers is also a very good light that can add drama to your photos. Similarly, the white mist has its own melodramatic magic and can be photographed after the rain in spring and autumn. And last but not least photograph what makes you feel good!
