Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from a Lookout Point on Highway 33 just about eight miles East of La Crosse Wisconsin to get out of most of the city lights.

Time

This photo was taken at 10:30pm.

Lighting

The lights speak for themselves (LOL). I took a 3 second open shutter, a high lighting comp, and high color comp, and had the ISO set at 400. I tested a number of lightings while up there, but this worked best. I also set the shutter to go off 2 seconds after I touched it to get as steady of a picture as possible.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D3200 and an aluminum, 62" tripod. A very simple, light tripod, but I have been using it for 20 years.

Inspiration

I have love the Northern Lights since I was a child. I have seen them when they have been at their brightest (I would call them a "light volcano"). I have seen them a very mild dim. I had night time delivery job for 15 years, so I had a chance to see them whenever they were out. Now that I can photograph them, I use software to keep track of them, and the sun's rotation to have an idea when they will come out.

Editing

I cropped the photo, and enhanced the lighting a little bit to get the colors to come out more.

In my camera bag

My camera, a 17mm-55mm zoom, a 70mm-300mm zoom, extra lens caps (we all need them....), an ND filter for each lens, an ultra-violet filter. cleaning supplies, 2 extra batteries and chargers, and extra SD cards.

Feedback

Keep track of the Aurora. Have a camera set to the right night time settings so that all you will have to do is tweak the settings.
