Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in Manchester's Victoria Square, next to the John Ryelands library.

Time

It was a chilly afternoon just before sunset. I had been shooting all day and my fingers were numb but I waited until the right moment to take the shot so there would be as few people as possible, in order to get a nice clean image.

Lighting

As it was golden hour the light had a lovely orange tinge and was shining from my right. This illuminated the arches perfectly but also produced lovely deep shadows, creating amazing contrast.

Equipment

I shot this image on my sony a7r iv with a G master 16mm - 35mm f2.8 zoom lens. Lighting was natural.

Inspiration

I loved the combination of having the red telephone box in the foreground, with the leading lines of the arches taking your eye deeper into the image. And the orange glow from the sunset just topped everything off.

Editing

For me I only really know if an image is any good until I get it into Lightroom. I feel like I'm unwrapping a present, as I move the sliders and slowly, one element at a time, the picture comes alive. Although I waited until there were as few people as possible, this is a very busy spot, so I did still have to remove a couple of people at the far end of the walkway. I also removed a lot of graffiti from the phone box itself. More often than not I actually seek out graffiti but it didn't seem to fit this image. Finally I boosted the contrast and brought out some more of the gold tones from the light. RAW images give you so much information to work with its incredible.

In my camera bag

I like to travel as light as possible so I have my Sony a7r iv 16-35mm f2.8 G master lens and a 24-70mm f2.8 G master. This set up allows me to cover most of the focal lengths that I'm likely to need, whilst keeping weight to a minimum. I also make sure to always bring plenty of snacks......... salted cashews are my favourite.

Feedback

I think street photography is a very exciting style as you can simply turn 90 degrees and suddenly see the perfect shot. As with all photography it's simply about framing the image in an interesting way, whether that means getting low to the ground, up against a wall for those leading lines, or maybe using the reflection from a puddle ( which we have plenty of in Manchester ) just be creative and above all, take the image that you would want to see and forget about anything else.
