Behind The Lens

Location

A peaceful moment on a Saturday in February 2023 in the Kubota Gardens of Seattle.

Time

This image was captured in the morning, around 9:00 in the morning.

Lighting

The morning light was relatively even (not specular), but I used a 3-shot burst to process it into an HDR image to increase the tonal range.

Equipment

Sony A7R III, Sony 24-70mm f2.8, and a tripod.

Inspiration

Like many photogs, I spent some time exploring the scene for what seemed like the best perspective. The Moon Bridge is such a colorful, iconic subject, it was a natural visual attraction. And, the serenity of the moment drew me in.

Editing

I used Photomatix Pro to create the HDR blend and Lightroom Classic for the finishing touches (cropping, tweaking tonality, and color correction).

In my camera bag

I like carrying one body and two lenses - the 24-70 is my workhorse, and either a Sony 70-300mm f/4.0 or a Zeiss 50mm 1.8. (The second lens choice depends on whether I expect to need the reach (70-300) or light sensitivity (50). Also, a spare battery and a small Godox flash for fill light. (And, energy bars!)

Feedback

Do some homework studying other's images taken at the location you're planning to shoot, and spend some time exploring perspectives (how the image looks in your camera's viewfinder).
