Location
I shot this photo of Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica while it was erupting. My vantage point was around three miles from the summit of the volcano.Time
The early morning mist had just cleared from the peak, and the clouds hugging the summit looked terrific. You can see the ash and gas venting from the volcano's summit. The black ash covers much of the right flank of Arenal.Lighting
The illumination was from the east and cast soft shadows to bring out the texture in the clouds, the peak of Arenal, and the landscape around the volcano.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon EOS 40D using a Canon EF28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens and a Manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
The lush landscape around the volcano was planted with food crops and gorgeous greenery, while the volcano was erupting ash, and gases and had blackened its slopes. Along with the clouds, this was too amazing a site not to shoot.Editing
I did some editing in Lightroom to bring out the texture and color. In my camera bag
My Canon EOS 5D Mark III, 16-35mm, 70-200mm, 15-85mm lenses, polarizer filters, neutral density filters, external flash, lens shades, and extra batteries.Feedback
Be sure to compose the image to capture the foreground and sky, not just the subject. It makes the photo that much more interesting.
