I took this photo at Cat Tales outside of Spokane, Washington in the summer of 2010.Time
It was an overcast afternoon with some sun breaks.Lighting
Lighting was purely natural. Was waiting for some cloud cover to occur to help take the reflection off of the tiger's enclosure that was made of chain link that captures and reflects direct sunlight.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D with an EFS 100-400 lens. No flash or tripod for this shot..Inspiration
I love big cats! I generally go to Cat Tales at least one time every season to capture these beautiful animals. They mystify and intrigue me! I feel drawn in to their thoughts and feelings.Editing
Very little post-processing was done with this photo. I cropped the shot and made some minor adjustments with saturation and definition.In my camera bag
I carry religiously my newest camera body, Canon EOS 1dX and my Canon EOS 5D. Both are all ready equipped with a lens specific to what I am wanting to shoot for the day. For this day, I used my 5D with a Canon 100-400 zoom lens, but also carried along a 70-200 lens. I always have extra flash cards, pre-charged batteries and my trusty hot shoe leveler.Feedback
Patience, patience and more patience! When shooting a subject that is behind bars in a zoo or animal park, you want to make sure to have a good telephoto lens and stand back from the bars, or chain link in this photo a good 5 feet or more away. The telephoto will enable you to focus on your subject through the chain link or bars without them appearing in your shot. Cloudy days also help greatly to reduce any glare that may be cast on the chain link by the sun.
