Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created during a visit to The Christmas Market in Cologne Germany

Time

The image was taken around 6.00pm in the early evening just as night had fallen I preconceived the image earlier in the day and decided that this would be the best time to capture the lighting on the Bridge and the Cathedral behind it.

Lighting

I wanted this image to convey the beautiful colours of gold and silver set against the night sky to give a sense of the atmosphere here at Christmas.

Equipment

The image was taken with a Nikon D3s fitted with a 24-70mm 2.8 lens. I decided against using flash to illuminate the foreground to avoid any hotspots and of course the camera was fitted to a tripod so that a slow shutter speed could be achieved. I also used a remote trigger to prevent any camera shake.

Inspiration

While enjoying a walk around the Christmas I realised the potential for this image and decided it would be better taken in low light/nightime so that the texture in the Bridge and the beautiful colours could be captured.

Editing

I always take photographs in RAW to enable the image to be processed/developed to the full range of tones and colours. I also use the Adobe RGB colour format in camera. The image is then processed in Adobe ACR before finally being adjusted and saved as a JPEG in Photoshop/Lightroom

In my camera bag

For landscape/architectural images I generally pack my Nikon D800 for the resolution and usually have a 24-70mm, 70-200 mm and 24-120 mm lens with me plus a 50 mm 1.4 for portraiture. I always pack a remote trigger, a tripod and a range of filters

Feedback

Always envisaged the image before you take it. Research the best location and perspective for the shot and most important take your time! With camera set in manual mode to achieve slow shutter speeds, a low ISO and a suitable aperture to record the detail patience is definitely a virtue!!
