Location
I wanted to find an area that was relatively empty so I could manipulate the angles into looking like an actual grave. I ended up photographing this I’m my backyard near the retention pond.Time
In order to get the post apocalyptic dystopia look I wanted I had to shoot near sunset. Maybe 45 minutes before.Lighting
The sunset was a gorgeous red that helped make the lighting look like fire in the back.Equipment
I used a Canon Eos 5D Mark IV with a 24-105mm lens.Inspiration
I recently had come back from a classmates funeral when I heard “Kill All Your Friends” by My Chemical Romance. It’s a combination of seeing all my old classmates again after a decade apart, mixed with the aftermath of that time in my life.Editing
I like to make the photos as realistic as possible to avoid anything looking artificial. Post editing was adjusting the perspective, changing the hues of the trees to red, and making the picture smaller so I could paint around it and give it more a the grave depth you see.In my camera bag
Canon 6D, 5D Mark ii, 5D Mark iv, 24-105mm Lens, ultra wide angle lens, and telephoto are what I make sure to keep on hand for different perspectives.Feedback
Don’t overthink how to bring your ideas to life. This was a cardboard box with dirt glued to it. Me and my assistant attached blocks of wood to the sides to prevent it from slipping. Also, don’t be afraid to get dirty! I was laying in the grass the entire time.
