Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside the basement door of the house sheltered from the wind.

Time

The snow started flying early in the morning so I waited just long enough for good natural light.

Lighting

This is natural light. I’m not even sure I know how to use the flash on my camera. Natural light can be tough with these macro shots.

Equipment

I used a Sony a58 with the Sony 2.8/30 macro lens. No tripod, I did this handheld which is not easy but all I could think about was catching snowflakes.

Inspiration

Every year, I set a goal of something I wanted to get better a capturing. This year was snowflakes and it was a good year as we got way more snow than normal. And it was good snow for photographing, big, fluffy flakes. The thing I couldn’t figure out was how to catch the flakes. After reading many photo blogs, the one suggestion that I tried and loved was using wool to catch the flakes. I tried mittens and scarves and decided this great wool, plaid scarf was the one. A great background and beautiful winter colors.

Editing

I adjust the contrast slightly to bring out the details of the snowflake. Minimal processing.

In my camera bag

I usually have several lenses, a lensball, a LEGO minifigure, a small notebook to write myself notes and reminders, extra batteries and a mini tripod.
