The boat there really gives a sense of scale to the glacier, great shot

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from the bow of a cruise ship at Glacier Bay, Alaska, which is off the Inside Passage. I remember being struck by the sheer scale of the view and how the boat in the foreground was dwarfed by the face of the glacier.

Time

I think it was around noon. I was concerned that the lack of shadows and contrast would make for a less-than-stellar image, but I was happy with the results.

Lighting

Mid day. (Blah).

Equipment

Canon 5D MkII, Caon 24-70mm F2.8L

Inspiration

Having lived in Alaska as a child I knew the beauty of Alaska and I was anxious to capture as much as possible.

Editing

Very few adjustments in Lightroom, except to improve contrast.

In my camera bag

Since I enjoy time lapse photos I usually have two bodies, both Canons; a 5D MkII and my 6D. The lens I use most is the Canon 24-70mm f2.8L. If I know I'm going to need something longer I'll pack the Canon 70-210, which adds quite a load to the bag. For time lapses I carry and use my Rokinon 14mm f2.8 which has lived up to its billing as an excellent lens for night photos.

Feedback

There are times when you are forced to accept conditions as they exist, such as on a cruise ship. I would have loved to have seen this area at sunrise but I didn't have a choice in the matter. So my thought process is "do the best with what you've got, and don't over-expose". Since scale is what impressed me in this view it is what I wanted to capture primarily.
