Location
I didn't have far to go for this one, it was taken right in my front yard. We've had very little snow here in Central PA this winter so I knew my chances for a shot like this would be limited. On top of that the wind was forecast to increase and spoil the subject.Time
Taken at about 11:30 PM on an overcast night following a light snow that gave everything a nice-though temporary-coating.Lighting
Initially, I saw this as an opportunity to experiment with a small light panel that I'd recently purchased but the light was too diffused. I wanted the snow on the tree to "pop". As a last resort I turned on a halogen flood security light mounted over my garage.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D MkII, Canon L series 24-70MM lens, a Manfrotto tripod and an (essentially ineffective) Neewer light panel.Inspiration
I've been focusing quite a bit on night photography over the last year or so, though living in the light-polluted Northeast makes it a challenge.Editing
The only editing I did was to reduce the hot spots created by the flood light on the right side of the photo. In my camera bag
In my Peak Design 30L backpack I carry two Canon bodies, the 5D MkII used for the photo and a 6D. 3 Lenses. My favorite for night sky photos, a Rokinon 14MM 2.8, my Canon 24-70 f2.8L and my Canon 70-200MM f2.8L. Other items: A Canon 2x extender, various ND filters and a Miops Smart+ remote trigger/Intervalometer.Feedback
Night photos in particular require a good understanding of the Exposure Triangle. Long exposures, whether night or day, make for interesting results. Have fun with it!
