Location
One of my favourite pastimes is taking photographs of classic cars and this image was taken at The Goodwood Festival of Speed held annually at Ggodwood House West Sussex EnglandTime
The Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place over 3 days where vehicles of all kinds midern, classic and historic race against the clock up Goodwood Hill. It starts around 10.00am and goes on all day. It is important to arrive early and take the opportunity to find a good location. This was taken around midday.Lighting
The natural lighting on the day was very bright sunlight with deep contrasting shadows making metering quite tricky. This was controlled by using a circular polariser and UV filtersEquipment
In order to take a sharp image of a moving subject it is helpful to have support from a tripod or monopod. As there was a large crowd present a tripod was out of the question! I therefore used my carbonfibre monopod. I used a Fuji XT2 camera fitted with a 50mm - 140mm lens with a 1.4 teleconverter. The lens was fitted with filters to control the light.Inspiration
There are many opportunities to take great images of all sorts of vehicles and I particularly enjoyed the way this car was drifting around the bends and curves and by using a slower shutter speed made possible by using the monopod I was able to achieve some movement in the carEditing
The image was processed using Adobe Bridge and Photoshop CC.In my camera bag
When I intend to take photographs at an event such as this my Fuji XT2 camera with it’s range of photo filters is excellent. I usually include my 50 -140mm lens plus a 16-55mm lens for closeup images plus a range of filters and a monopod/tripod.Feedback
When planning a photo shoot of this kind it is important to arrive early and select your preferred location. Motor racing takes place behind safety barriers so a good telephoto lens is desirable together with a short telephoto to capture the action! Slower shutter speeds enable the movement to be captured whilst maintaining a good sharp focus on the subject. Patience is also required to get a good shot as many images will be rather hit or miss!
