Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at The Hurlers in north Cornwall, UK

Time

I deliberately got up early and drove up The Hurlers well before dawn on a very cold and frosty morning, hoping for a good sunrise. I needed to be there well before sunrise as it’s quite a long walk from the closest place you can park the car. By getting there early it allowed me to walk around & check the stones & were the light was going to break.

Lighting

I wanted to use the rising sun to create a dramatic effect with the stones at dawn. However it was a bit more cloudy than I wanted, so I used the predawn light to create a more moody scene. By using a long exposure & a tripod I was able to adapt to the conditions that were nothing like the weather forecast.

Equipment

Tripod, Nikon D7000, cable release.

Inspiration

There are a lot of really great places in Cornwall to take sunrise pictures, but very few photographers seem to go inland to the ancient stones and sites. I wanted something different, especially since I live on the coast, as most of my sunrise pictures are taken on the beach or harbour.

Editing

The original was shot in raw and once I had converted it, I added the mist in photoshop to increase the atmosphere of the picture.

In my camera bag

Always in my camera bag is my Nikon D850, Sigma 24-105 art, sigma 100-400. Other lenses & kit depend on what I’m planning to do. I always use a manfrotto 190 tripod as I’ve found the balance between weight and robustness is just right. Sometimes I have a crystal globe, or sigma 105 macro. I’ve also have a mcoplus speedlight MC0910, a cheaper speedlight but provides a good service at a fraction of the cost of a Nikon speedlight. Occasionally I have a ND10 filter.

Feedback

Cornwall has a lot of inland features from Neolithic structures and 100+ year old mine working ruins, as well as the coast. If you are coming to take photos here, don’t just stick to the coast. Look at the weather forecast but have backup idea if it doesn’t turn out to be as you are expecting.
