Location
This was taken in Cades Cove early in the day. These cubs were playing near their mother in a field and seemed to stop and pose the photo. It was a matter of being in the right place at the right time.Time
I first saw the cubs at about 10:00 in the morning and watched for another 30-45 minutes before capturing the image.Lighting
It was a cloudy morning in the Cove which made for nice even lighting.Equipment
To take the image I used a Nikon D610 and Nikon 28-300 lens.Inspiration
When I shoot in Cades Cove I often look for bears, but try to be open to whatever wildlife or scene presents itself. The mother was a beautiful bear, but the playful cubs drew most of my attention that morning.Editing
I did very little post processing. I warmed the image a small bit and added sharpness and clarity in some places. In my camera bag
I typically carry my Nikon D610, a manfrotto carbon fiber tripod and 2-3 lenses. For wildlife I carry a Nikon 28-300 and Tamron 150-600. For landscapes I tend to stick with my Nikon 16-35 f/4.Feedback
I think that when shooting wildlife it’s great to start with an idea in your head. Anticipate the shot, a simple background, and understand the lighting conditions. It’s nearly impossible to prepare for every aspect of a wildlife shoot, but preparation always pays off.
