Location
This photo was taken in my home studio while living in Henderson Nevada. I am a self taught photographer, so I am constantly pushing myself to learn more and try out the new techniques I am learning.Time
This photograph was taken in the afternoon. This photo was taken on October 16, 2016 at 1:46 pm.Lighting
This photograph was shot indoors during the day with daylight coming through a north facing sliding glass door off of a covered patio. It was a low light situation, so I used the Shade mode on my camera to bring in the colors. The camera was mounted directly above and pointed down at the Pencil Jar sitting on a matte black table.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D810 camera with a Nikkor 35mm f1.8G Lens mounted on a Me Foto Tripod using an Arri 300 Watt Hot Light.Inspiration
I enjoy Still Life and Table Top Photography and am always on the lookout for interesting items to shoot from different vantage points. When I saw this red tin can I was immediately inspired to make it into a "Pencil Jar" for my kids. So I sharpened a bunch of colored pencils and arranged them in a swirl with the tips pointed up in the tin. When I was looking into the jar to pick out a pencil, I really liked the way the pencils looked and decided I wanted to photograph them from up above looking down from overhead and right into the pencil tips in a 3D kind of way. I placed the Pencil Jar on a Black Wooden Table and set up a tripod next to the table, mounted the camera to the tripod over the pencils with the camera pointed down into the pencil tips.Editing
Usually Still Life Table Top Photography is shot with an attention to detail and a lot of attention paid to lighting and post processing to get just the right framing, lighting, perspective, etc. Because I used directional lighting over a dark background, I was able to position the camera in such a way that there were no distracting shadows on the table and this photo did not need very much post processing. I only cropped and centered the image. In my camera bag
The first thing I always pack in my bag is my Nikon D810 Camera Body mounted with whatever Lens I will be using, a Me Foto Tripod, and a multi-purpose reflector. Depending on what I am shooting I will choose which Lens/Lenses to bring: Nikkor 35mm f1.8G, 50 mm f1.8G, 85 mm f1.8G, 70-200mm Zoom.Feedback
I shoot almost everything in manual mode. This photo was taken in Aperature Priority Mode which is great for controlling the depth of field and for making your focal point jump out of the page.
