Behind The Lens
Location
We were approached by the Royal Greenwich Fencing Society to see if we could take some shots for them to use on their website. We both use the same building, so we got four of them into the studio on a Tuesday night to get some portraits and action shots.Time
This would have been on a Tuesday evening, probably around 8pmLighting
We used three lights in the studio - one at full power facing away from the subject but bouncing off the ceiling, one side light placed higher than the other to being out the face inside the mask.Equipment
This would have been taken on my Canon 600d, using my Canon 28-135mm lens. We would have had three lights set up, one at the back bouncing off the ceiling, and two side lights.Inspiration
Seeing the protective masks the fencers wore reminded me of the suits that the people in the film Alien wear, so I was going for a sci-fi look with this.Editing
This would have been taken in RAW, so it would be processed in lightroom, with a B&W conversion, and levels adjusted. In my camera bag
My Canon 600d has been with me for years now, along with a couple of Canon lenses, but I try to plan ahead and not carry too much with me.Feedback
Take your time with the model and engage them. Let them know what you're trying to achieve and that's half the job done.
