Approaching the Town Lock in the centre of Newbury on the Kennet and Avon Canal. From here the canal flows under the Town Bridge eastwards towards Reading. The K&A as it is known stretches for 87 miles between Reading and Bristol and has 105 locks. The canal was built between 1794 and 1810 to link the rivers Kennet and Avon, enabling goods to travel between Bristol and London. It fell into disuse with the coming of the railways but was restored in the late 1900s .
