Location
I live in a rural area in Tasmania. It being winter we were high up in the hills cutting up the dead wood for our fire. I always take my camera as there often wedgetail eagles flying around also the hill is dotted with dead trees that make interesting photos. Plus it gives me a break from loading the wood.Time
It was midday, not a good time I know. But this is when Richard drove up the hill to us. It was his farm and he had lived there all his life.Lighting
Winter, the light is my favorite. The colors are richer and there are more interesting shadows. Midday and I had to make the most of it.Equipment
I had my Nikon D7100 with the original kit lens VR 18-55 f3.5-5.6G.Inspiration
I had always wanted to take some images of Richard but they would have been staged. Here I had the opportunity to capture him in his natural environment talking about his life, reliving memories. He was looking down the valley at a once beautiful house that had been abandoned for some time, his Grandparents had lived there. He described his Grandfather as a mean old bugger. It was a privilege to know Richard. He has since passed away.Editing
Yes, I used photoshop, starting with raw for the first tweaks, then converting it into black and white. I darkened the sky to bring back some washed out cloud. Dodging and burning the face. Back to raw for a touch of clarity and sharpen. In my camera bag
I am still using my D7100. I now carry with me Nikon DX 55-300mm4.5-5.6 GED, Sigma 11-16mm f2,8. and I sometimes take Sigma150-600. C. Always a tripod and reflector.Feedback
I told Richard what I was doing and he soon forgot about me clicking away as he told us his story. I had to push myself out of my comfort zone and I now find it easier the more I do it. The more photos you take the better you get. Learn by your mistakes and be positive about what you do.
