I took this photo near Horse Thief Canyon in the Badlands area, near Drumheller, Alberta, Canada.Time

My series of shots started with the sun not visible yet, and the sky kept getting more beautiful - from pinks and blues to the yellow-gold from the sun... I just kept snapping - It's really true that if you want a good shot of the sunrise, you have to be early and just keep talking shots because you never know when the sky is going to be at its most beautiful.Equipment
Nikon D800 with 80-400 Zoom lens Tripod Focal length: 200/10, F-stop: 22 ISO: 50, Shutter Speed: 1/6Inspiration
It wasn't the shot I was after originally! I got to the canyon before sunrise but I could tell that the lay of the land wasn't going to give me what I wanted. I turned around and saw that the sun was just about to come up right behind these pump jacks. So I seized the moment, quickly set up my tripod and got a number of shots as the sun came up. The pumps were moving slowly, so I took a number of shots to make sure I had the right angle of the arm in relation to the sunEditing
I think I very gently lightened the foreground a bit to bring up the low grass, but other than that, nothing. In my camera bag
Nikon D800, tripod, lenses: 50mm, 20mm, 24-120mm zoom and sometimes my 80-400 zoom. I always have a polarizer filter on hand too.Feedback
I think its important to do a 360 when you are out shooting landscape - try not to fixate on what you have in mind and only that. I was disappointed that the light wasn't going to be right to shoot the canyon and I would have missed out on capturing this shot if I had only been focused on 'trying' to make something work.
