Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo of the facade of the building adjacent to my workplace.

Time

It was such a beautiful day, and I like to talk walks during breaks to be active and clear my head. I was taking such a break after lunch, and happened to find myself in the right place at the right time.

Lighting

As I approached the edge of the building in the photo, I looked up and realized just how amazing the lines, light, and overall design of the building was. Given it was midday, the sun was just overhead and slightly facing the glass giving the beautiful gradation of light from the top of the structure downward.

Equipment

It was one of those situations where the best camera is the one you have on you, and that was my iPhone 6s Plus.

Inspiration

Maybe it was the mental clarity from my afternoon walk, or simply luck, but looking up and seeing all of the right elements come together at that moment really inspired this shot.

Editing

I did some post-processing on this image using Lightroom Mobile and Adobe Photoshop Fix. I converted the photo to monochrome and adjusted tones and shadows, added a little noise reduction, and then added a slight vignette in Lightroom Mobile. I then took the photo into Adobe Photoshop Fix to tone down some of the extreme highlights on the glass from the sun and to smooth out the light gradients in those overexposed areas. Though I was extremely happy with the quality directly from the iPhone photo, the camera can only do so much and these post-processing edits really helped make the final shot.

In my camera bag

When I am out shooting, I typically take my Nikon D610 or D7100 and my Tamron 28-300mm lens as a walkaround. I will also usually have my Nikkor 35mm 2D and Sigma 50mm f1.4 for capturing specific shots in lower light or if I need a shallow depth of field. I do not use flash often, but when I do I will use my Nikon SB-400 speedlight.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open. In this day and age when most of us have a camera on our cell phones, anything is possible as long as you are looking out for opportunities. It helps to have better optics and higher resolution, but the same advice applies when you have a full pack of gear out with you. If you aren't watching for opportunities and have don't have your camera handy, you won't get the shots. Once you have the photo, you can do as much or little post-processing to get the image you have in your mind's eye.
