Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken on a normal gravel road with the motocross bike on a stand to make sure we get the pose perfect of a sample of a tale-whip move. To get perfect detail of the bike we had to made sure that everything was controlled from the bike to the rider and to make sure we got the exact motocross move perfect to sell the perfect idea of the image we did.

Time

I did the image in the mid-day sun, because we went for a stadium look, i needed a very hard rim light as stadium lights are very strong and over powering.

Lighting

I used 2x 400watt falcon eyes strobe lights, one as key light to focus on the detail of the rider and one strobe to over power the rim light with the sun. The strobe i used for the rim light was coupled with a stripbox with grid to make sure the rim light was focused on the rider and tail piece of the bike. With the key light i used a beauty dish with honey comb grid to focus mainly on the rider and from piece of the bike

Equipment

I used my Canon 60D with fixed tripod stand with a Canon 50mm lense to get the best sharpness in the image and because i did the image in mid-day i had to use a UV filter on my lens.

Inspiration

I do alot of Car photography and the one thing i dont see alot is motocross images that stood out to me that was taken in a controlled scene and not a stadium race or competition and having alot of friends doing motocross, the perfect moment for me to have tried an idea of a motocross scene that i personal like and i encourage all photographers to go in this line of photography as there is a short in motocross photography i personally feel.

Editing

Because i wanted the perfect motocross moment i had to get an image at a stadium with the lights, so after that i had to buy PNG images of sand spray to get the launch feel into the image. So i added the stadium image i took with the sand PNG images and merged them in Photoshop CC and with KNOLL light factory, i added a bit more light to the stadium lights because i wanted the lights to be very powerfull in the image and had to do abit of retouching on the rider because of the different coulors of the rider outfit.

In my camera bag

I always keep my Canon 60D, 4x trigger masters, Canon 50mm lens with a 200mm Canon lens. A view finder with a Canon 430ii Flash.

Feedback

The best advice i can give to others for doing more a less the same style is to plan your idea out on paper and go and see examples to know how your subject must look like to sell the idea you want to have. Focus on where your lights needs to be and where they are coming from. Planning your photo will make everything much easier and make things go faster and when doing post production in programs will be faster as well because you will know exactly what to do when doing the post
